Ervin & Cottone Split Wall Victories
Saturday 10/30/09 report
- Wall Township, NJ - Halloween Day was the last points race of the season for the Modified Outlaw Micro Stocks at Wall Stadium. Coming into the day Nick Cottone had held a virtual strangle hold on the class, winning 8 feature events to build an insurmountable point lead. With Cottone slotted to start on the pole for his heat race, it looked like good for him to end the season with another win. Defending M.O.M Champion Tom Ervin quickly made it known that this day would not be a cake walk for Cottone, as he grabbed the lead at the start and went on to lead every lap. In the feature event Ervin started on the pole and again got off to a good start, but Cottone was on the charge. Just after the mid way point of the race Cottone closed the gap on Ervin enough to attempt an inside pass entering turn one. Ervin held tough on the outside, getting off of the corner ahead of Cottone. Cottone tried again entering turn three, but Ervin was having none of that, and retook the lead. The two ran nose to tail the rest of the race, with Ervin scoring his 4th feature event win of the season aboard the John Kazmierski owned K&K Express #99.
- The mood at the track on Halloween day was a festive one, with trick-or-treaters roaming the pits and racers becoming brothers-in-arms as they pitched in to help anyone to who was having trouble. The feelings of good will extended onto the track:
- The Modified Micro Stocks raced on the track the same time as the World Formula and Controlled Stock Micro Stocks (but were scored separately). As the lead duo of the Modified race came around to lap the rest of the field, they inadvertently affected the running order of the front running World Formula entries, allowing Kenny Lund to pass Don Boonstra. In an act of true sportsmanship, Lund moved over and allowed Boonstra to retake the position and the win.
- The days results confirmed the already apparent Modified Outlaw Micro Stock Championship of 72-year old "Uncle Nick" Cottone, with Ervin and Dennis Hiddemen rounding out the top three.
Sunday 11/01/09 report
- Wall Township, NJ -November 1st Wall Township Speedway held their Sunday Series Turkey Derby, and the Modified Outlaw Micro Stocks were there for the action. 2009 Modified Outlaw Micro Stock "Uncle" Nick Cottone brought the field to the start of the heat race, but at the drop of the green Tom Ervin jumped to the point. Cottone gave chase, but was unable to mount a serious challenge. On the cool down lap Cottone's engine faltered, and his #5 was towed to the pits for an engine change. At the start of the feature Ervin looked ready to repeat the previous days performance as his #99 streaked out to an early lead. Cottone was not about to let history repeat itself, and he knuckled down and made up the gap. Shortly after the halfway point, Cottone pulled low coming off of turn four and powered past Ervin to claim the lead. Ervin responded by pushing his #99 even harder, but to no avail as Cottone claimed 2009 Turkey Derby victory.
